Dance teachers need to have the proper teaching credentials

Dance lessons for kids can be costly and time consuming, so when your choosing a dance school for your kids, it’s important that you are sending them to one where both your time and money are being well spent.

You may be shocked to know that not all dance teachers are certified to teach dance. That is the same thing as a science teacher who is not certified to teach science. There are several reasons you want your child to be taught by someone who is certified, with the obvious being your child will be learning the proper way and techniques, to dance.

Simply put, these self trained educators are at risk of doing more harm than good when teaching children dance and risk doing damage to those who otherwise are serious about dance. This could happen in many ways, for example, they could teach them an improper technique which could result in injury. Or, because they aren’t trained to teach, they end up standing in front of the room demonstrating rather than instructing, which can be frustrating for the student and turn them off dance altogether.

It’s one thing to know how to dance and another to know how to teach, that’s why dance teachers, like any other educators, should be held to certain standards and expectations. Having the proper credentials means they not only know how to teach properly both in dealing with an individual and in technique, but they also know what it takes to properly motivate, encourage and teach dancers of all age groups.

For example, they know that teens get easily distracted with their friends, but an experienced dance teacher knows how to work through that and to get them focussed on the task at hand. Similarly, a certified teacher will notice when one of their pupils are shy or falling behind and will be able to effectively address the issue.

And if you have a child who is planning to make dance a permanent part of their life, there would be nothing worse than realizing 10 years down the road that they weren’t taught something crucial to being competitive, such as an improper technique. If they were instructed by a certified teacher, these things and so many more could be avoided.

A properly certified dance teacher knows all of the elements it takes to develop a good dancer. If you want to send your children to a school that can offer that, contact York Dance Academy in Stouffville at 905-640-6082 or visit them at www.yorkdance.com to learn more.
