Tips to keep your pet active

Finding ways to keep your pet active can sometimes be a challenge. Here are some great ideas to keep your pet on the move, rain or shine!

Toys can be a pet’s best friend and can keep them busy even when you are not home. Cats will love any toy with cat nip and will spend hours chasing them throughout the house! Small dogs love chasing a ball around, whether indoors or out and large dogs are always ready for a game of fetch or Frisbee.

Play dates offer a great opportunity to socialize your dog. Invite a friend along with their pet and you can chat while the dogs enjoy a good romp at the doggy park.

On a rainy or cold winter’s day, take your dog or cat out for a drive to your local pet shop. Most pet shops love to have visits from their four legged friends and it gets both of you out of the house when the weather isn’t cooperating!

Research doggy day cares that offer classes and activities for your pet. Whether it is obedience school or exercise classes there are many options you may not realize exist. Your local pet store may be able to make some suggestions as well.

Hiking all year round is a great way to keep your dog active. They love exploring and sniffing out new areas. Chances are there are many dog friendly trails right in your own neighbourhood perfect for you and the family to discover.

It may prove more challenging to keep your feline friend active, especially your indoor cat. Making it necessary for them to use the stairs is a good start. Have their litter box on one floor, their food on another and if they use a kitty bed, keep it separate as well. This will force them to move about the house for all of their daily rituals. Cats love to climb and kitty towers are excellent options to keep them moving.
